Finding Grace at the Center
The Beginning of Centering Prayer

by M. Basil Pennington, Thomas Keating & Thomas E. Clarke

a review by John Gilbert

Finding Grace at the Center by Pennington et al (ISBN 1-893361-69-1) is published by SkyLight Paths Publishing in Woodstock, Vermont. This is a book of articles by these three authors about Centering Prayer.

Centering Prayer is a contemplative form of prayer which has been the main topic of several books by Thomas Keating. The process involves first becoming very comfortable, calm and relaxed. Close your eyes. Next breathe deeply and relax even more. Then concentrate on one name for the Divine. Hear this word over and over in your mind in a slow rhythmical chant or prayer. You can use any word, thought, idea or concept for this part of your Centering Prayer.

Continue this process for about twenty minutes. Then quietly and slowly come out of your meditative prayer. Open your eyes and gather yourself together. That's all there is to it. You'll feel energized, more alert, more relaxed and more able to cope with the concerns of life.

This book will help you through this process regardless of your spiritual path or religious beliefs. Centering Prayer is recommended as one of the better methods of attaining knowledge of our Creator and ourselves. Dr. John Gilbert recommends this book as one of the better books on the subject.
